'POSEIDON'
is one of the top Greek musical groups in North America. This
critically acclaimed band, based in Ottawa, Canada, consists of
five members: Chris Pezoulas (lead singer, clarinet, flute &
saxophone), Nick Pantieras (keyboards, bass), Tony Pantieras (bouzouki,
baglama, Tzoura), Nick Nikolakakos (guitar) and George Missios
(drums). All members of the band are first generation Greeks born
in Canada, and have been performing together since 1988.
'POSEIDON'
plays both contemporary and traditional Greek music from a
wide variety of popular Greek singers, and most recently has focused
its attention on composing and recording original music. They
have performed at hundreds of dances, festivals, televisions shows
and concerts from coast to coast in Canada, and in parts of the
United States, such as West Palm Beach (Florida), San Francisco,
New York City and New Orleans.
Notable
events include the Greek Summer Festivals in Calgary, Halifax,
Ottawa, and Montreal where they have entertained 20,000-50,000
people at each event. POSEIDON has also performed at various
National functions for the American Hellenic
Educational Progressive Association, for many associations
within the Greek communities of Canada. They were the first Canadian
Greek Band ever selected to feature at the AHEPA National Convention
at Disneyworld, Orlando in 1998 and were again featured at
the millenium convention in New Orleans in 2000. POSEIDON
has played benefit concerts including one for the Children
Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) supporting Thallasemia research.
The
band has played with a few well known singers from Greece who
have performed in Canada including Kokotas, Polizogopoulos, Zahos
and Peraki. As popular entertainers, the members of Poseidon have
also had the privilege of personally meeting and receiving guidance
from several contemporary stars of Greece, such as George Dalaras,
Nana Mouskouri, Vasilis Karas, Dimitris Kontolazos, and Dimitris
Mitropanos.
The
band has recorded three albums; "Laikes Stigmes" (1992) and
"OPA!" (1994, re-released 1998)" have enjoyed tremendous
success. POSEIDON will be releasing worldwide its debut
original album named "TORA" in JULY 2001.
This original album consisting of 13 tracks, has already received
outstanding reviews from industry experts who have received advance
copies.
"Tora"
features music written by Pezoulas and lyrics by Maria Livaditis, and
is a product of the dedication and passion of its executive producers
Chris Pezoulas, Nick Pantieras and Tony Pantieras. The CD also
features collaboration with Panagiotis Brakoulias, a rising star,
who worked on the arrangements for ten tracks. This album offers
a diverse sound from the tradional rembetiko style of "Yia
Hari Tis", the various sirto/ tsiftetelia such as "Tilefoniti"
and "Zilevo", the moving hasapiko "Mi Fevgis",
the ballad "Noimata", to the Latin flavoured Title track
"Tora" and the techno remix of "Den Boro".
POSEIDON'S
dynamic and engaging live performances have been tremendously
received by Greeks and by many fans from other ethnic cultures.
Non-Greeks throughout North America have been introduced and truly
experienced Greek music through this group. Most importantly,
as young musicians they have helped recapture the interest of
all the Greek youth within the communities.
